OUR HISTORY

June 1987: Special Service Freight Company, Charlotte, was established as an agent location for Special Freight Service Company, who operated in the Tri-State area, headquartered in Newark, New Jersey.
Within months of establishing the Charlotte location, the two local managers were forced to incorporate as a new and separate company when the ‘parent’ NJ operation closed down, and so, in August 1987 Special Service Freight Company of the Carolinas, Inc. was born.
Initially servicing the Charlotte air cargo market with just a couple of vans and trucks, the Company began to broaden its presence by establishing licensee locations throughout the Carolinas.

Wilmington, NC opened in October 1988, followed by Greenville, SC and Greensboro, NC the following month, November, 1988.
Five years later, October 1993, Special Service opened an office in Asheville, NC and Columbia, SC began operations in June 1994.
The final expansion under the original owners was the opening of Charleston, SC in July 2003.

Special Service continued operating exclusively in the Carolinas until October 2005 when it was sold by its founders to the current Owner.

The Company now operates 12 terminals offering service in twenty cities spread across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Carolinas and Georgia operations are all linked with a dedicated nightly line haul service operated by the company.

We have also established a partnership network with other local cartage providers that extend our customer service into Alabama, Tennessee and the Florida panhandle. These are also serviced by line hauls out of the main Atlanta hub.

His experience as a driver and with consignees gave him the necessary insight to be able to hire and manage the drivers who would care about the entire delivery experience and customer satisfaction. An attention to detail, excellent communication before and throughout a task, and actually caring about the customer is what has elevated his operation into one noted for consistently providing a shipper, forwarder and end-user a concierge-type experience. Operations Manager, Orlando, FL

Daly was first introduced to the airfreight industry 10 years ago. Prior to being the operations manager in the MCO office, Daly worked as a financial analyst for a large newspaper, as well as a project manager for a restoration company. She brought with her a wealth of experience in management, and an analytical view of the business which drove her to review the structure of the business in the Orlando market as a whole. She recognized the ‘Amazon’ impact on freight at a very early stage, and at a time other local cartage agents weren’t focused on residential deliveries, Daly helped focus an intense effort on servicing this customer vertical. While other companies were attempting to restructure their companies and at a time other local cartage agents weren’t focused on residential deliveries, Daly developed an intense effort on servicing this customer vertical, therby establishing MCO as the 'residential leader' in the area of providing multiple 2-person teams as a standard service.

He has been promoted to Terminal manager of the RDU operations following the Corporate buyout of the RDU agent-owned operations. Married 41 years to Robin, they both enjoy their boxer dogs and working outside .

Mike Roush

Manager and Owner Savannah, GA

Mike is the second-generation manager/owner of Savannah, and has a thirty year background in sales, management and operations with small business and Fortune 50 companies. Running SAV over the past ten years, he has grown the business from three cargo vans and a line haul straight truck, to five straight trucks, three vans, two tractor trailers for linehaul, with 300% revenues growth. He is now in the process of opening a new 30,000 square-foot facility, which he hopes to get operational by the end of 2019. Active with his church, the Knights of Columbus, as well as with the well-known Irish community in Savannah, Mike serves on the Executive Committee for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. He enjoys camping, motorcycling, and most outdoor activities, and of course, spending time with his family.

Re: Columbia, SC
We had a shipment that was supposed to be in CAE this AM for a delivery tomorrow, and ended up in CLT instead. Elaine has informed me that your CAE office, specifically Brian Dolder, has been phenomenal in their response to helping us solve this, and have done everything possible to make this right, even though it was no fault of theirs or Special Services. Their willingness to pitch in, assist in problem solving, and work with us on Plan B was a bright spot in a tough Friday morning. She came to me as soon as I came in to tell me what a wonderful experience it has been to work with them and asked me to pass on her thanks.
I was thrilled to be able to start my Friday morning on a positive note, and wanted to spread the good news. We truly appreciate having a partner so willing and able to help. Please accept our gratitude, and pass it on to your staff in CAE.  Have a wonderful day and thanks!

Your Driver Joseph
This past Sunday night your driver Joseph Pendergraf  picked up a shipment in Greensboro and delivered it to NYC and then retrieved that same fright and delivered it to Raleigh. This is a high profile customer, Disney on Ice, that insists on the highest level of service and timely, seamless freight transactions... I would be remiss to not bring to your attention the terrific level of professionalism and service that Joseph rendered in this very important operation. He was on time at all locations and supervised the shipment in such a manner that I was totally at ease with his work ethic....he responded promptly to all phone calls and was courteous and polite.
I feel Joseph should be commended for his work and his "get it done” attitude. He is truly an asset to your fine company.

I am writing you today to tell you of the absolutely wonderful experience I had using your company a couple of weeks ago. The three gentlemen that came to deliver our product were Jeremy, Jamie and Chris. They went above and beyond to provide the best customer service that one could expect. I would recommend your company based solely on those three men.

Thank you for such a great job!

Re Orlando, FL
Subject: Special Service Orlando - Anthony Toledo
I have been working with Anthony Toledo on a large project for Disney Orlando. It is project cargo over an 8 week period and continues to be active.

My project business is hugely complicated with multiple component, service levels, and deadlines. It is very difficult to navigate under the best of circumstances. Add Mickey Mouse to this component and it has been utter chaos.  One of my most challenging build outs ever.

Anthony has been detail oriented, flexible, calm (I need that :}) and a true PARTNER in managing this project. I can confirm that I have been utterly unreasonable and he has been un-phased. He has gone WELL over his obligation as a service provider and became an extension of me and my team.

You are truly blessed to have Anthony on your team.  I have reached out to my VP of Quality Control to advise him of same.

Re: Nashville, TN

I had a pickup that needed to happen on 10/5.  The agent that did the delivery and was holding the crate was completely booked.  I reached out to Special Service.  He listened attentively to my requirements and then went above and beyond to acquire the crate and make the pickup happen at the required date/time.  The Station answered all my emails and made sure I got my pod hard copies and charges. (There was a holdup in Crown and they contacted whom they needed so I could have my paperwork.)
It has been a pleasure to work with Special Service and I will definitely use them again.

Re: Raleigh, NC
Hi Steve! I’ve been meaning to send this but have been back logged. On Labor Day weekend I had a super-hot shipment that was coming into RDU.  Your RDU office did a phenomenal job. This shipment was a medical shipment delivering directly to the hospital where they were holding a patient for surgery while waiting for it to come in. The driver was waiting to pick it up at the airport, took it immediately there. Brian @ RDU worked with me non-stop to get it set up and keep me up to date. I couldn’t have asked for better service. Pleasant, professional, and even worried about the patient who was waiting on the freight! Big GIANT KUDOS to your Raleigh office!!!
Thanks,Echo Clayton, Corporate Operations Admin. Manager, Alt. Security Coordinator ICAT Logistics,

Re: Columbia, SC
Hello there!  I just wanted to take a moment and tell you how wonderful it is working with Matt and Brian at your office. Always friendly, and always accurate in status’ on my freight. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Driver was fantastic, called ahead to notify me he was running behind which was wonderful.
I appreciated him very much being good within the time window and was efficient friendly and reliable!
You should be delighted that he is on your team and I wouldn’t mind having him at my home anytime.

--- If I must add a further comment from myself, the driver called here around 4:45 and notified me that he was running behind w/ the delivery however he should be there no later than 5:15. He was also very friendly with me and was able to provide the tracking information right away (which most people don’t have it ready when I need it). He also called me right back when he was complete with the order and still very proper, presentable and nice.
Thank you for having such a great driver!!

Outstanding Job!
Steve, Charles, I have not talked to you gentlemen in a while, but wanted to touch base with you about your Tampa and Miami teams.
We sent close to 100 shipments through their terminals this past weekend (not including the 50 or so we sent them the previous week) for expedited deliveries that had to be made over the weekend.  They got almost every one delivered on Saturday as requested and handled them professionally at all times.

Even Terry in your Atlanta terminal helped me a few times on Saturday when I could not get through to an on call person in TPA and MIA.

I wish the other agents I use across the country were as good as Special Service Freight.  Please let me know if there is anything we here at EFW may be of assistance with.
Thank You! David Agger, Strategic Accounts, Estes Forwarding
